I finally went to see Sleep No More and you really MUST go. They've transformed over 40 rooms of a schoolhouse into a haunted house based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, complete with actors who dance, fight, and perform without speaking a word. MIT 6.270 Robot Competition (physical robots)		1/28	Boston Metro

Market Day at Birka: Renaissance Faire		1/29 - 1/30	New Hampshire
Perhaps you prefer the past to the future. This is the largest local event by the SCA, the Society for Creative Anachronism, as seen in the 2008 movie "Role Models". They'll have a medeival market place, food, costuming, fight tournaments, and you'll learn something about history. For years I've been hunting down creative alternatives to Xmas. There are not many. You can see a movie, visit a Chinese restaurant, do folk dancing, or go skiing. But don't forget that the post just before this one lists holiday lights! I track 21 different holiday light attractions in New England, the biggest list ever.

And because New Year's is coming up, here are some off-beat ideas, including the largest list of City "First Night" celebrations, plus a bunch of other ideas. Don't make me sad and just hang out in a bar or restaurant for New Years. You can do so much better than to basically have the same damn getting drunk experience these bars offer every night of the year.

The Raven in the Frog Pond: Edgar Allan Poe and the City of Boston		12/17	Boston Metro
Did you know that Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston? I got to meet Mayor Menino recently because the three of us on the "Boston Poe Committee" got a spot named Edgar Allan Poe Square near Boston Common last Spring. This week a new exhibit on Poe opens at the Boston Public Library, and they're having literary debators from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston debate over Poe's legacy and which city can best claim Poe as their own. OK, so much for pretending it's not Christmas. I got all the way through two events before -- SMACK! -- oh wait, it's the Winter Solstice too! Here are a few solstice park events. The Geminids are one of only a few annual meteor showers. They'll be visible all night from dusk but with good visibility from 10pm Sunday evening through early Monday morning with a peak at 2am. Springfield's Parade of the Big Balloons		11/27	Western Mass
Probably the best event after Thanksgiving is the parade in Springfield. The non-metro towns that try the hardest to lure in tourists are Springfield, Quincy, Salem, and Lowell. But what I have my heart set on is this contest to build elaborately complicated machines called Rube Goldberg devices. That's when the candle heats the air going into the balloon, which bursts, surprising the bird who tips over a bucket, sending water onto a cat, who yowls and pulls a string, releasing a bowling ball to roll... you get the idea. 1-4pm. Thanksgiving Contra Dance		11/26	Boston Metro
Some fun exercise is this folk dance in Watertown. I've been to many contra dances, which are line dances meant to facilitate people meeting each other, and they tend to attract intelligent and classy people. It's easy to pick up and, unlike ballroom dancing, if you do it wrong you just laugh and get back in place and nobody seems to mind. Highly recommended. America's Hometown USA Thanksgiving Celebration		11/20 - 11/22	South Shore
The first stop for Wheel Questions is this giant Thanksgiving parade and celebration, that will attract 125,000 people. There's an artist's event Friday night, a parade and festival on Saturday, 11am-4pm, and then a crafts festival Sunday 11am-4pm. Another historical re-enactment is at the Higgins armory, a fantastic museum that's worth visiting any time. Frog Pond Opening Day & Skate Performance		11/19	Boston Metro
Bringing it back to Boston, there's an ice skating rink on Frog Pond in Boston Common that is refigerated and open in warm or cold weather through March. For opening day, they bring professional ice skaters to perform, the Mayor will give a speech, and skating for the day is free! It's a wonderful event and highly recommended. 5:30pm.
